Fixed Header breaks when containing div position set relative

I'm using the Fixed Header plugin for DataTables to style a table with a fixed thead. Other styling on the page requires that the table's containing div have 'position:relative' to ensure it's z-index layers it properly under another div. Setting this containing div's position to relative breaks the Fixed Header functionality as now the table's header scrolls with the body. Does anyone have experience dealing with this conundrum?
