jquery auto complete field not working in header row of table in ie8

I have a jQuery auto complete field in on of the cells in the header row of a table. It works fine in Firefox and IE 11 but not IE 8. Have not tried IE 9 or 10 (don't have access to them).

I have spent hours trying to figure out why this will not work in IE 8, any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

One thing I forgot to add is that I also have an auto complete field on each of the rows in the table as well. they all work in the rows, just not in the header row.
